Privacy
UK TV Guide keeps as little about you as it can: nothing at all if you just look at the guide, and only what you save if you use the app or make an account. No adverts, no tracking, nothing sold.
01Who we are
UK TV Guide (the website at uktvguide.app and the UK TV Guide app) is run by Rouic Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales. We are the controller of the personal data described here, under the UK General Data Protection Regulation and the Data Protection Act 2018.
Questions about your data, or requests to use your rights, can be sent to the contact form (choose "Privacy").
02In short
- Looking at the guide needs no account and leaves nothing about you with us, beyond the ordinary logs any website keeps for a short while.
- The app works without an account. It keeps your shows, reminders and channels under an anonymous ID with no name or email.
- An account holds your email address (and name, if you give one), how you sign in, and what you have saved, so it is the same on the web and your devices.
- No advertising, no tracking across other sites or apps, no selling or sharing of your data for marketing. Ever.
- You are in control: download everything we hold, or delete your account, from Settings at any time, on the web or in the app.
03Using the website without an account
Your TV region. Listings differ by region, so we work out which you are probably in from the approximate location that Cloudflare, our network provider, derives from your connection's IP address (a postcode district or a town, never more precise). We use it on the spot to choose the listings and do not store it against you. You can change the region at any time; if you do, your choice is remembered in a cookie on your device.
"Use my location". Only if you tap it, your browser asks your permission and shares your position. Our server sends it to postcodes.io (a free UK postcode service) to find the nearest postcode, and asks Freeview which TV region that postcode is in. Neither service learns who you are, and we do not keep your position or the postcode; we only remember which region that postcode district belongs to, which is not information about you.
Logs. Like any website, our hosting and Cloudflare process your IP address, browser type and the pages requested, to deliver the site and keep it secure (for example to block attacks and limit repeated sign-in attempts). These logs are kept for a short time (normally no more than 30 days) and are not used to build a picture of you.
04Using the app without an account
When you first open the app it gets an anonymous ID from us, so you can follow shows, set reminders and choose your channels without signing up. Under that ID we keep only what the app needs: your TV region (guessed as above, or chosen by you), your channel choices and settings, the shows you follow and the reminders you set, and the dates the ID was made and last used. There is no name, email address, phone number or advertising identifier.
Reminders are notifications your phone schedules for itself from the times we send it. We do not use push notification services, so there is no notification token to keep.
Your location is used only if you tap "Use my location", for a one-off look-up of your TV region as described above.
An anonymous ID that has not been used for 180 days is deleted, with everything saved under it.
05If you make an account
An account lets you keep the same shows, reminders and channels on the website and on any device. Making one is optional. If you use the app first, everything you had saved moves into your new account.
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| Your email address | To sign you in, and to send a password reset link when you ask for one. |
| Your name (optional) | To greet you; nothing else. |
| Your password | Stored only as a one-way bcrypt hash; nobody can read it, us included. |
| Sign in with Apple, Google or Microsoft | The identifier the provider gives us for you and the email address it shares (which may be an Apple private relay address). For Apple, also a token, kept encrypted, so that we can tell Apple to forget the sign-in when you delete your account. |
| Your region and postcode (if you give one) | To show your local listings. |
| Your channels, preferences, followed shows and reminders | The guide itself: what you asked it to remember. |
| Your signed-in devices | The kind of browser or device and when it was last used, so sessions can expire and you stay secure. |
We don't ask for anything else. You must be 13 or over to make an account.
06If you write to us
When you use the contact form we keep your name (if given), email address and message, to answer you. Messages are deleted after 24 months.
07Why we're allowed to
| What we do | Lawful basis (UK GDPR article 6) |
|---|---|
| Running your account or anonymous app ID: favourites, reminders, sign-in | Contract: it's the service you asked for. |
| Guessing your region from your connection | Legitimate interests: showing listings that are right for you, without asking for anything. |
| Logs and security | Legitimate interests: keeping the service working and safe. |
| Answering your messages | Legitimate interests: helping you. |
| Recording visits to the website (only if switched on, and only if you allow it) | Consent, which you can withdraw at any time. |
| Keeping a record of data protection requests | Legal obligation: showing we dealt with them. |
09Who else is involved
We don't sell or share your data. These organisations handle some of it for us, under contract, or (where marked) only because you choose to use them:
| Who | What for | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Rouic's own platform, hosted with OVHcloud | Our servers and database, where everything above is kept. | London, UK |
| Cloudflare | Delivering the site quickly and securely; approximate location for the region guess. | Worldwide network; Cloudflare, Inc. is in the US |
| postcodes.io (Ideal Postcodes Ltd) | Finding the nearest postcode, only when you use "Use my location" or we guess your region. | UK |
| Freeview (Everyone TV Ltd) | Which TV region a postcode is in (the postcode only; nothing about you). | UK |
| Our email provider | Sending password reset links and replies, when you ask for them. | UK or US, depending on the provider |
| Apple, Google, Microsoft (your choice) | Signing you in, if you choose to. They are responsible for your account with them. | US |
Where data goes outside the UK (to Cloudflare, an email provider or a sign-in provider you choose), it is protected by the UK's adequacy regulations or the UK International Data Transfer Addendum to the EU standard contractual clauses.
10How long we keep it
| What | Kept until |
|---|---|
| An anonymous app ID and what's saved under it | 180 days after it was last used, or you delete it |
| An account and everything in it | You delete it, or 36 months after it was last used |
| A signed-in session | 90 days after it was last used, or you sign out |
| A password reset link | 1 hour (an app sign-in code: 5 minutes) |
| Messages to us | 24 months |
| Records of data protection requests | 3 years |
| Our record of administrative actions (may include your account's ID) | 24 months |
| Logs | Normally no more than 30 days |
11Your rights
You can ask to see the personal data we hold about you, have it corrected, have it deleted, restrict or object to how we use it, and receive it in a form you can take elsewhere. Where we rely on your consent you can withdraw it at any time.
Two of these you can do yourself, straight away: Settings → Download my data gives you everything we hold about your account as a file, and Settings → Delete my account deletes it and everything in it (on the web, or in the app). For anything else, write to the contact form (choose "Privacy"). We answer within one month.
If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, please tell us first. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office: ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint, 0303 123 1113.
12Keeping it safe
Everything travels over HTTPS. Passwords are hashed, session tokens are stored only as hashes, and the keys we hold for sign-in providers are encrypted. Access to the servers is limited to the people who run them. If something ever went wrong in a way that put you at risk, we would tell you and the ICO as the law requires.
13Children
The guide is for everyone, and looking at it involves no personal data. Accounts are for people aged 13 and over. The app's anonymous mode collects nothing that identifies anyone, keeps location off unless asked, and there is no profiling or advertising anywhere in UK TV Guide.
14Changes
If we change how we use your data, we'll update this page and its date, and for anything significant we'll say so on the site and in the app before it takes effect.
